RICHMOND, Ky. (April 26, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team posted a season-best 23 hits as the Bucs cruised to an 18-7 win over Eastern Kentucky in the first game of the series Tuesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field in Richmond, Ky.

The Bucs (24-15, 12-10 A-Sun) saw six starters post three hits in the contest led by centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) who was a perfect 3-for-3 only needing a triple to complete the cycle with four RBI and scored three runs.

Freshman Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was impressive in relief for ETSU throwing 5.2 scoreless innings to close out the game and pick up his second win of the year. The outing was the longest of the career for Freeman who struck out four and limited EKU (14-27, 6-9 OVC) to four hits on the afternoon.

The Bucs exploded for six runs on nine hits in the top of the first to take a 6-0 lead. Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) each had a two-run homer in the inning.

In the top of the second, ETSU took a commanding 11-0 lead after a two-run single by shortstop Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and a three-run homer by Scruggs.

Doane picked up his third RBI of the game in the top of the third as Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) came in to score on a ball hit to third by Doane to give the Buccaneers a 12-0 advantage.

The Colonels cut the ETSU lead to 12-5 in the bottom of the third as EKU plated five runs on six hits highlighted by a three-run homer by Bryan Soloman.

Michael Garcia added two runs for Eastern Kentucky in the fourth as he singled in Austin Grisham and A.J. Jamison to make the score 12-7.

Freshman Zach Waters (Woodstock, Ga.) gave the Bucs an insurance run in the sixth as he brought home Scruggs on a sac fly to left center to increase the ETSU lead to 13-7.

In the top of the eighth, the Bucs added five runs to take an 11 run lead, 18-7, after a sac fly by Scruggs and hits by Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.), Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) and Hoilman.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they close out the series with Eastern Kentucky. For more information on Buccaneer baseball, visit ETSUBucs.com or follow the Bucs on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ETSUAthletics.
