Women's tennis looks to win third A-Sun Tournament title

Thursday, April 14, 2011

DeLAND, Fla.
(April 14, 2011) - After earning its fourth Atlantic Sun regular season title, the ETSU women's tennis team will take on Stetson in the semifinals of the A-Sun Tournament on Friday morning at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Bucs, who are looking for their third A-Sun Tournament title, will take on the Hatters at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.
Leading ETSU (13-6, 9-1 A-Sun) this year are all-conference selections Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela). In addition, senior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) has been solid all season as she leads the team in singles wins with 22, which includes a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play. Junior Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) leads the team in dual singles victories with 13.
In doubles play, the duo of Kedzo and Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) lead the team with an impressive 19-8 overall doubles record and a 9-1 A-Sun mark.
Stetson enters the match with a 17-5 overall record. The Hatters are led by all-conference selections Unnati Purushotham, Carolina de los Santos, Lindsey Cable, and Shannon Gunning. Purushotham and de los Santos were first-team selections, while Cable and Gunning earned a spot on the second-team in the doubles category.
ETSU defeated Stetson during the regular season, 4-2, in Johnson City back on March 26. In that match, ETSU opened the match strong by winning the doubles point, before taking three of the singles matches to earn the victory.
Last season, UNF took the A-Sun Tournament title by defeating ETSU in the finals, 4-1.
The winner of Friday's semifinal match between the Bucs and Hatters will advance to the championship match, which takes place on Saturday 10 a.m. The Bucs have advanced to the championship match every season since joining the league in 2005-06.
Campbell, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, awaits the winner of the UNF-Jacksonville quarterfinal match in the other semifinal match tomorrow.
Live viewing of courts 1, 2 and 3 can be seen throughout the championship on Hatter Vision.
