Burton shines as Bucs sweep Bisons, 8-3

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 10, 2011) - Senior Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) added to a weekend of stellar pitching performances for the ETSU baseball team as he guided the Bucs to a sweep of Lipscomb with a 8-3 win Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park in the series finale.
 
Burton went 8.1 innings in the start limiting the Bisons to three runs scattering 11 hits with four strikeouts. With the win, Burton improves to 1-2 on the year for the Bucs (20-9, 11-5 A-Sun) who have won four straight.
 
Dannie Strable suffered the loss for Lipscomb (11-21, 3-9 A-Sun) as he was tabbed with three runs on one hit and two walks after being unable to record an out in the sixth inning.
 
Offensively, catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way as he was one of three Buccaneers to post multiple hits in the contest going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two walks. Outfielders Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) also had two hits on the day.
 
ETSU got things going in the bottom of the first as Trent singled in Scruggs and Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.
 
The Bisons cut the Buccaneer advantage to 2-1 in the top of the second after an RBI double by Kyle Henry.
 
In the top of the third, Lipscomb took its first lead of the game as the Bisons plated two runs on singles by Josh Chism and Lee Wilson to make the score 3-2.
 
The Buccaneers exploded for six runs in the in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead, 8-3. After ETSU loaded the bases with one out, Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch to bring in the tying run. In the next at-bat Trent singled to right scoring Scruggs. The Bucs added two runs on a ball hit to short by Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale. Fla.) and a Lipscomb error before Betterson capped off the scoring with a two-run single to right.
 
Junior Dak Rissman (West Palm Beach, Fla.) came in and closed the game out in the ninth as he struck out Chism with runners on first and second and two outs.
