DELAND, Fla. (March 26, 2011) - Stetson's Sean Emory broke up a scoreless game with three-run double in the bottom of the sixth as the ETSU baseball team dropped its third straight contest falling to the Hatters 4-1 in a pitcher's duel at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
Sophomore Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) had a quality start for the Bucs (13-7, 5-4 A-Sun) despite being tagged with his first loss of the season. Bushey threw five scoreless innings before giving up four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts as he was taken out in the sixth inning.
Stetsons Kurt Schluter improved to 4-0 as he stymied the ETSU offense limiting the Bucs to one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
The Hatters (20-4, 7-1 A-Sun) broke into the scoring column first in the bottom of the sixth as Emory dumped a bases clearing double into left center to give Stetson a 3-0 lead. Spencer Theisen added a run for SU later in the inning on a suicide squeeze bunt scoring Theisen from third to make the score 4-0.
After a single by John Long (Anderson, S.C.) and a double by Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the top of the eighth, junior Skyler Barnett (Johnson City, Tenn.) brought Long in to score on a ball hit to second to cut the Hatters' lead to 4-1. Stetson then brought in Jake Boyd with a runner on third and two outs as he got Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) to fly out to right to end the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Boyd faced the minimum as he picked up his third save of the year.
Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Buccaneers in the contest.
ETSU returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as the Bucs look to avoid the sweep against the Hatters in the series finale. For more information on ETSU baseball and all other Buccaneer athletic news please visit
