Women's tennis shuts out Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 25, 2011) - The ETSU women's tennis team earned its sixth straight Atlantic Sun Conference victory after rolling past Florida Gulf Coast, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.

"It was good to see a team effort today and have contributions from everyone at all positions," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "We encourage everyone to come out and support us as they have throughout the year. Tomorrow is a huge match and we are expecting some tough competition."
 
With the victory, the Bucs move to 9-6 on the year and 6-1 in A-Sun play, while Florida Gulf Coast falls to 9-6 and 4-4 in the A-Sun.
 
In doubles play, ETSU took each of the three contests to take the early 1-0 lead.
 
ETSU remained in control throughout singles play as well by taking each of the six matches. In fact, five of the six matches were straight set wins for the Bucs.
 
Senior Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) rolled past Morgan Bechtel at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-1. Then, junior Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Iris Rendon at the No. 2 position.
 
At the No. 3 spot, Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) won in straight sets over Bettina Botha, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) earned the toughest victory of the day as she narrowly defeated Jen Evans, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7. Finally, Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) each earned victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Voinea defeated Gyanna Mandic, 6-2, 6-4, while Navrostska blanked Bibiana Almeida, 6-0, 6-0.
  
The Bucs close out the weekend homestand tomorrow afternoon against Stetson. The match is set for 2 p.m. at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
