ETSU falls to Duke in second round of Callaway Match Play
Monday, March 21, 2011
The Bucs will take on No. 3-seeded Georgia Tech on Monday
BALL GROUND, Ga. (Mar. 20, 2011) - ETSU freshman Spencer Lawson (Raleigh, N.C.) won his match against Duke, but the 10th-seeded Blue Devils took the next four matches to defeat the 15th-seeded Bucs, 4-1, in the second round of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Lawson, who was playing in the No. 2 position for the Bucs, got the Bucs off to a quick start by winning the first match, 4 and 3, over Wes Roach. Lawson led throughout the entire match.
The Bucs pulled the upset by defeating second-seeded Alabama in the first round of the event, earlier in the day. ETSU will take on the host and No. 3-seeded Georgia Tech tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
With ETSU up 1-0, Duke recorded a win to even the match back up after Austin Cody defeated Lucas Armstrong (Church Hill, Tenn.), 4 and 3. Then, the Blue Devils took the lead as Tim Gornik beat Devin Komline (Dorset, Vermont), 3 and 2.
The Blue Devils clinched the win after Julian Suri and Brinson Paolini earned the final two victories. Suri defeated Patrick Spraggs (Rochford, England) 2 up, while Paolini got past Paul O'Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland), 1 up.
The event is comprised of four rounds of match play between teams, similar to the Final Eight of the NCAA Championship. Each team match includes individual matches between each of the five players, and the winner of each individual match scores a point for his team.
Georgia Tech is the host school and is joined by USC, Alabama, Baylor, Duke, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Pacific, South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and Washington State. Georgia (2005) and UCLA (2007) are past winners of the event while 2010 runner-up USC leads a contingent of five teams (Iowa, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA) returning from last year's tournament.
