Women's tennis picks up key A-Sun victory over Campbell, 5-2

Saturday, March 19, 2011

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (Mar. 18, 2011) - After sweeping through doubles play, the ETSU women's tennis team took four out of the six singles matches to defeat Campbell, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
"Today we came out strong and with confidence," said ETSU Assistant Coach Travis Sandlant. "We knew what was on the line and what we were playing for. It is always good to come away with a win against an undefeated team and I was very happy with the performance today."
With the victory, the Bucs move to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in A-Sun play. Meanwhile, Campbell falls to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Camels were all alone in first place in the A-Sun standings before the match started, but now there is a log jam of four teams tied atop the league. ETSU, Campbell, Kennesaw State, UNF, and Stetson each have just one loss in A-Sun action.
The Bucs opened up play by earning the doubles point after taking all three matches. At No. 1, the doubles duo of Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) quickly defeated Lisa Sutton and Dominek Wallaart, 8-1. ETSU clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 position when Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) and Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) knocked off Anais Gomar and Heather Robinson, 8-1. To cap off doubles play, Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) also earned a victory for the Bucs at No. 3 as they dropped Karolina Chernaya and Borislava Nikolova, 8-3.
The Bucs kept the momentum rolling into singles action as they got off to strong starts, especially in the middle and bottom portions of the lineup. Kedzo put the Bucs up 2-0 after she quickly defeated Robinson, 6-0, 4-0, at the No. 4 spot. At No. 4, Kedzo won in straight sets over Mhirit, 6-1, 6-2. Just a little while later, Navrostska knocked off Wallaart, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 5 position to make it 3-0 for the Bucs.
ETSU clinched the victory at the No. 6 position when Voinea earned a straight set win over Natasha Afridi, 6-3, 6-2. Voinea is now a perfect 5-0 in A-Sun play and 9-3 overall in dual match play. The Bucs also picked up a victory at the No. 3 position as Wieliczko defeated Nikolova, 6-3, 6-4.
The only Campbell victories came at the top of the lineup as Sutton and Chernaya earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

ETSU returns to action tomorrow with a match against USC Upstate, in Spartanburg, S.C. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
