Bucs rally for 5-4 win over Broncos in game one of doubleheader

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 26, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team overcame a 4-1 deficit for the second straight game to pick up a 5-4 comeback win against Rider Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Cardinal Park.
 
Senior Ben Booker (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up his second win of the season throwing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Buccaneers (4-1).
 
In the top of the first, the Broncos (0-2) went in front 1-0 after Karl Johnston came in to score from third on a ball hit to short by A.J Albee.
 
The Bucs answered in the bottom half as centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the inning with a triple to deep center. A couple batters later, Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) brought Scruggs home on a slow grounder to third to even the score at 1-all.
 
Rider regained the lead in the fifth as the Broncos scored three runs on three hits capped off by an RBI single by Mason Heyne to take a 4-1 advantage.
 
ETSU rallied to tie the game in the seventh as senior Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.),
and Scruggs hit back-to-back home runs. Trent's two-run home run to left was his first of the season, while Scruggs hammered a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence to make the score 4-4.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bucs grabbed their first lead of the game as junior right fielder John Long (Anderson, S.C.) drove in Pratt from second on a double down the left field line.
 
Scruggs led the way offensively for the Bucs going 3-for-4 in the contest with a triple, home run and scored two runs. Junior Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) earned his second straight save throwing a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
