No. 50 ETSU men's tennis sweeps MTSU, 7-0

Sunday, February 20, 2011

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2011) - The No. 50 ETSU men's tennis team posted a dominating 7-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Saturday night at the Bristol Racquet Club, improving to 3-4 on the season and earning their second straight win.

"We came out with a great spark tonight from top to bottom and everyone really played well," said ETSU assistant coach Ricky Rojas. "It was a very good win against a very good Middle Tennessee State team."

ETSU seized control of all three doubles matches to jump out to the early 1-0 lead. The Bucs picked up an early win at No. 1 doubles as Charles Bottoni (Bois Guillaume, France) and Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia) downed Shaun Waters and Ben Davis, 8-4. Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) and Juan Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) sealed the doubles point for the Bucs with an 8-5 win over Matthew Langley and Kyle Wishing. Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) and Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela) completed the doubles sweep with a hard fought 9-7 win over Elliot Barnwell and Joseph Cohen.

In singles play, the Bucs jumped out to early leads and never looked back, with only two of the six matches lasting three sets.

No. 112 Bandres, playing in the No. 1 position for just the second time this season, defeated Waters 6-4, 7-6. Teraz knocked off Davis 7-6, 6-4, to earn his third dual match singles victory of the season.

At the No. 3 position, Bottoni picked up a tough three set victory over Langley, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Ramirez won the first set over Cohen 6-1, but Cohen retired early in the second set. Ramirez joins Bottoni and Teraz with three singles victories to lead the team.

Freshman Jorge Varon (Caracas, Venezuela) earned his second victory of the season and first at the No. 5 position as he defeated Dimitri Pippos, 6-2, 6-4. Finally, Jeremy Bonnevalle (Keerbergen, Belgium) picked up where he left off last weekend as he earned a tough three set victory over Barnwell, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Bonnevalle is a perfect two for two thus far in spring singles play.

The loss for the Blue Raiders was their third straight after opening the season with a 4-1 mark. MTSU is now an even 4-4 on the season.

The Bucs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 to take on USC Upstate in the first Atlantic Sun Conference match of the season. The match will take place in Spartanburg, S.C. and will begin at 1 p.m.
