Lady Bucs gear up for critical Florida road swing

Friday, February 04, 2011

DeLAND, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2011) - Coming off a perfect 5-0 homestand, the ETSU women's basketball team looks to take its positive momentum to Florida as the Lady Bucs start the final month of regular season play with a critical conference road swing, beginning Saturday afternoon at Stetson. Tip with the Hatters is set for 1 p.m. inside the Edmunds Center.

The Lady Bucs, who have a record of 12-9, 10-3, are currently in second place in the conference standings and stand two games ahead of Stetson in the loss column. Meanwhile, ETSU still needs to make up two games on league-leading Florida Gulf Coast - who the Blue and Gold face Monday night on CSS.

ETSU is coming off a 100-62 victory over Mercer Monday evening where head coach Karen Kemp earned her 250th career win. Six Lady Buccaneer players scored in double figures - including junior guard Natalie Pickwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) netting a game high 20 points. The Blue and Gold shot a season high 57 percent and scored 33 points off 24 turnovers.

Overall, during this season-best five-game winning streak, ETSU is outscoring its opponents by nearly 25 points per game and out-rebounding its foes 51.6 to 35.8. Freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) is averaging 15.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and shooting 54 percent since Jan. 22, while junior Gwen Washington (Manassas, Va.) is coming off the bench to add 11 points and 5.6 rebounds over her last five games.

Stetson (11-10, 7-5) has won five of its last six games since falling to the Lady Bucs in overtime back on Jan. 10 - including a 70-52 victory over Florida Gulf Coast.

The Hatters have three players scoring in double figures with sophomore guard Victoria McGowan averaging a team-leading 14.3 points and 4.2 assists. McGowan is coming off a 14-point, 5-assist effort in Stetson's 78-53 win over Lipscomb Monday night, while Jessica Conner scored 16 points off the bench.

As a team, Stetson is averaging 70.0 points per game and shooting 44 percent in 12 conference games.

The Lady Bucs lead the all-time series 11-1; however, the last two games played in DeLand have been decided by two points or less. ETSU needed overtime to sneak by the Hatters last month in Johnson City as Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) sent the game to extra time when her two free throws with three seconds remaining tied the game at 69, and sophomore post Tosha Austin (Chattanooga, Tenn.) iced the game with two freebies of her own in the closing seconds of overtime.

Fans unable to make the trip to Florida can watch the game on ASun.TV or via live stats courtesy of the Stetson Hatters.
