JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 20, 2011) - The ETSU women's tennis team opened their 2011 season in impressive fashion as they swept past Milligan 7-0, inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center on Thursday night.
"It feels good to get a win, but we have a tough week ahead of us," said ETSU assistant women's coach Travis Sandlant. "It was also good to get the freshmen a feel for what it is like to play college tennis. Hopefully they got a little taste for it now and hopefully they can perform when it matters most."
The Bucs started the evening by sweeping all three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) led the way by blanking Kara Kelly and Ahmee Kelly of Milligan, 8-0, in the number one position.
The newcomers picked up the first dual victory of their ETSU careers as Giulia Andreazza (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) and Marine Wieliczko (Rouen, France) knocked off Jessie Rose and Caitlin Conley, 8-1, in the number three position. Finally, the veteran group of Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa)and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) rolled past Albany Kelly and Celeste Carpenter, 8-1, to close out doubles play.
The Bucs rode the momentum from their strong doubles play into singles action as each of the six singles matches were won in straight sets. Wieliczko made quick work of Conley in the number three position, 6-1, 6-0. Jaime then knocked off Kara Kelly, 6-2, 6-0, in the number one singles position. In the number two position, Holtzhausen defeated Albany Kelly, 6-0, 6-1.
In the number four spot, Kedzo blanked Carpenter, 6-0, 6-0. After sitting out doubles play, senior Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) shut out Ahmee Kelly, 6-0, 6-0, in the number six position. Finally, Diana Navrostska (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated Halie Winfrey, 6-0, 6-1, to close out the match.
"We are going to put in a good week of practice and hopefully we can create some pressure that we had tonight and get ready for Eastern Kentucky in a week," added Sandlant.
The Bucs begin an eight match road swing starting next Friday as they travel to Eastern Kentucky, beginning at 11 a.m.
