ETSU volleyball closes out the regular season at home against USC Upstate on Wednesday

Tuesday, November 09, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 9, 2010)
- After dropping a pair of contests on the road against Kennesaw State and Mercer, the ETSU volleyball closes out the regular season against USC Upstate on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
The Bucs have a lot riding on their final regular season match of the season. With a victory on Wednesday, ETSU will finish the Atlantic Sun with a 7-3 mark and with a chance to lock in the number three seed for the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament. However, ETSU will need a little help as they need both Belmont and Mercer to drop their final matches of the season in order to lock in the third seed. If Belmont and/or Mercer win, ETSU will open the tournament as the No. 4 or No. 5 seed.
The opening round of the tournament features the No. 4 seed taking on the No. 5 seed, and the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 seed. No. 1 Lipscomb and No. 2 Kennesaw State have already received first-round byes.
Belmont takes on top-seeded Lipscomb on Tuesday night, while Mercer takes on second-seeded Kennesaw State on Saturday evening. Belmont has already been defeated by Lipscomb earlier in the season as the two teams played a non-conference match.
ETSU (23-8, 6-3 A-Sun) was defeated by Kennesaw State and Mercer this past weekend by equal 3-1 scores.
In the match against Kennesaw State on Friday night, the Bucs committed 30 attack errors, while Kennesaw State recorded just 18 errors. KSU also outhit the Bucs .204 to .166. ETSU also had 13 service errors on the night, while the Owls committed just four.
On Saturday, Jamie Duffy (13), Amiee Frutchey (11), Krista Hurley (11), and Libby Hansch (10) each recorded double-digit kills for Mercer in the victory. Meanwhile, Mercer hit .210 for the match while limiting ETSU to just a .108 efficiency.
USC Upstate (10-17, 1-8 A-Sun) enters the weekend following two losses against Kennesaw State and Mercer as well. The Spartans have not won an A-Sun contest since they defeated Stetson in their conference opener back on September 16.
The Spartans are led by freshman Cori Harris as she leads the team and ranks tenth in the A-Sun with 2.79 kills per set. Harris has also recorded 34 service aces this season which ranks her seventh in the league. Sophomore setter Emily Sanders is one of just three players in the league to average more than 10 assists per set. She is currently averaging 10.27 assists per set. Megan Healey leads the team defensively with 3.74 digs per set.
ETSU owns a 5-4 advantage all-time against USC Upstate, which dates back to 1984. The Spartans defeated the Bucs in the last meeting 3-1, this past season in Spartanburg.
The match against USC Upstate will also mark the final home and regular season match for the six ETSU seniors.
The Atlantic Sun Tournament begins on November 18 at Alico Arena in Ft. Myers, Florida. Stay tuned to ETSUBucs.com for complete tournament information.
