JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
(Oct. 19, 2010) - The ETSU volleyball team will step away from conference play on Wednesday with a non-conference showdown against Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. First serve from Ben Johnson Arena will be at 7 p.m.
The Bucs (18-6, 4-1 A-Sun) are coming off a perfect 2-0 weekend where they defeated Jacksonville and North Florida on the road. ETSU started the weekend with a tough 3-2 victory over Jacksonville, where Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.), Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) each recorded a double-double. The Bucs have won their last five matches that have gone to five sets, following an early season five-set loss to Appalachian State.
On Saturday, the Bucs swept North Florida 3-0 and were led by Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.), Devine, and Baufield. Long and Baufield combined for 18 kills without an error during the match, while Devine added 10 kills.
The NCAA released its new RPI rankings on Monday afternoon and ETSU is one of two Atlantic Sun teams in the top-100, as the Bucs currently sit at No. 94.
Wofford (12-13, 2-6 SoCon) enters the match following a home split in conference play. The Terriers defeated Western Carolina 3-0 on Friday night before falling in five sets to Appalachian State on Saturday.
Offensively, Wofford is led by a trio of players that have recorded over 200 kills this season, including Stacy Byrd (2.32 kps), Amanda Liguori (2.26 kps), and Catelyn Amende (2.16 kps). Liguori is the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Week following an impressive 26 kills for the two matches on the weekend. Bekah Dorsey leads the Terriers with 5.37 assists per set, while Reagan Styles leads the team defensively with 3.95 digs per set.
ETSU leads the all-time series 11-4, which dates back to the days when both teams were members of the SoCon. The Bucs won the last meeting between the two schools 3-2, back in 2005.
The Bucs will return home on Saturday as they will welcome in Big South member Presbyterian to Brooks Gym for non-conference action. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
