ETSU volleyball defeats Chattanooga 3-1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Sept. 22, 2010) -
The ETSU volleyball team went on the road and defeated longtime rival Chattanooga 3-1, Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Maclellan Gym.
"We battled when we were down and we were able to keep mentally focused in a very supportive UTC environment," said ETSU head coach Lindsey Devine. "We had to work hard for every point."
With the victory, ETSU improves to 10-5 on the season, while Chattanooga falls to 4-11 with the loss. Additionally, the Bucs tied up the all-time series with the Mocs 27-27 with the win tonight. The Bucs outhit the Mocs .200-.177 and finished with a 14.0-8.0 advantage in blocks as ETSU continues to lead the A-Sun in that category.
Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) and Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) led the Bucs offensively with 14 kills apiece. Long finished the match with a .370 hitting percentage while also adding a solo block and five block assists. Ryan also added seven digs on the night. Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs with 44 assists and also came in with four kills, two aces, and five block assists. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the ETSU defensive efforts with 14 digs, while also dishing out five assists.
The Mocs got out to a quick start to begin the opening set as they led 2-0. However, the Bucs took their first lead of the match at 12-11 thanks to a kill by Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.). The match went back-and-forth until the Bucs took a 23-21 lead after a Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) kill. Chattanooga was able to reel off four straight points to win the set, 25-23. Chattanooga outhit ETSU .100-.067 in the set.
Chattanooga began the second set much of the same way as they got out to a quick 12-6 advantage. Then, as Chattanooga had set point with a 24-19 lead, ETSU rallied back with a 5-0 run to tie the score at 24-24 thanks to a Devine kill. Once again the Mocs had set point after a kill from Paula Passmore, but ETSU reeled off three out of the next four points to take the 27-25 set victory. The Bucs got kills from Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) and Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) to close out the set. The Bucs outhit the Mocs .359-.200 in the set.
With the score tied at a set apiece, ETSU started out strong in set number three as they got out in front 14-10. Chattanooga quickly put on a rally of five straight to take a 15-14 lead. The two teams would trade blows throughout the rest of the set. With the score tied at 24 apiece, the Bucs got kills from Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) and Long to close out the set with a 26-24 victory. Ryan led the Bucs with five kills in the set.
The fourth set was tight throughout as neither team was able to build more than a three point lead at any point during the set. With the score tied 22-22, ETSU was able to force three straight Chattanooga errors to close out the set and match.
Courtney Barnes, Heather Parman, and Ellie Kuhn each finished with double-digit kills to lead Chattanooga offensively. Bailee Chastain finished with a game-high 46 assists for the Mocs.
The Bucs will return to action this weekend as they will travel to Durham, N.C. for their final regular season tournament of the year. The Bucs will participate in the North Carolina Central Tournament and will take on North Carolina Central, Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton and South Carolina State in the event.
