ETSU volleyball sweeps Charleston Southern and South Alabama at SpringHill Suites Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. (Sept. 17, 2010)- The ETSU volleyball team swept Charleston Southern (26-24, 25-21, 25-16) and South Alabama (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) on day one of the SpringHill Suites Invitational at Hanner Fieldhouse, on the campus of Georgia Southern.
With the two victories, ETSU now stands at 8-4 on the season. They are currently on a four match winning streak and have also won seven of their last eight matches overall.
In the first match against Charleston Southern, the Bucs got off to a strong 5-2 start in the first set. However, CSU went on a major run to take an eventual 20-16 lead. Then, the Bucs went on a crucial five point run to take a 21-20 lead. After Charleston Southern took a 24-23 lead, the Bucs came back with three straight points of their own to take the set, 26-24. Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Bucs in the set with five kills and eight digs.
The second set saw Charleston Southern jump out to an early 6-1 advantage. Then, with CSU in front 15-12, ETSU reeled off four straight points to take their first lead of the set. It was a lead the Bucs would not give up as they took the set 25-21. Devine once again led the Bucs in the set with six kills and six digs. ETSU also outhit CSU .167-.103 in the set.
After gaining the 2-0 set advantage, ETSU opened up the third set in a hurry as they took a 7-0 lead thanks to two kills from Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.). The Bucs would control the set throughout for a 25-16 victory to end the match.
Devine led the Bucs with a double-double that included 14 kills and 15 digs (.195), while also adding three block assists for the match. She has recorded back to back double-doubles and has recorded a double-double in three of her last four matches. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) also finished with a double-double as she dished out 31 assists to go with 14 digs and five kills. Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) was the third ETSU player with a double-double as she came away with 10 kills and 11 digs. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led ETSU defensively with 18 digs.
The Bucs finished with a 10-8 advantage in blocks while also outhitting CSU .166-.100 for the match.
ETSU 3, South Alabama 0
ETSU got out to a quick start in the opening set as they took a 8-3 lead thanks to kills from Long, Devine, Ryan and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.). After both teams traded leads during the middle of the match, South Alabama tied the score at 21-21. Then, ETSU recorded four straight points to win the set, 25-21. The final run by the Bucs was fueled by kills from Long and Barber.
The second set opened up with both teams trading blows. With the score tied 8-8, the Bucs recorded three straight points thanks to a Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) kill, a block by Stancliff and Barber, and a kill by Barber. The Bucs would extend their lead and control the set 25-17. The Bucs outhit the Jaguars .317-.125 through two sets.
The Bucs again jumped out to a quick 8-2 advantage in the third set thanks to solid play from Barber. She recorded an early kill to go along with a service ace. The Bucs stayed in front the entire set and took the set 25-18 to close out the match.
Devine led the ETSU offense with 11 kills (.357) to go with eight digs, while Cogburn dished out 31 assists to go with three kills and eight digs. Long and Barber each recorded eight kills apiece. Tamblyn again led the Bucs defensively with 18 digs.
The Bucs outhit the Jaguars .296-.133 for the match. With the loss, South Alabama falls to 5-9 on the season.
The Bucs will continue the SpringHill Suites Invitational tomorrow as they face host Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. and Winthrop at 5 p.m. to close the event.
