JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2010) - The ETSU men's soccer team opened its five-game home stand on a high note Wednesday night as the Bucs dropped Winthrop 2-0 in the home opener at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

"It was a good performance and an important result for us tonight," said head coach Scott Calabrese. "Winthrop is a very strong program that is well organized and talented. We are learning to compete and win against quality teams. We created some quality chances, and it's good to see Aaron and David convert."

The Bucs (3-2-0) had a 9-8 advantage in shots over Winthrop (2-3-0) with 4-2 coming on frame. ETSU also led in corners 5-3.

Junior James Holt (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) picked up his first shutout of the season making two saves in the contest.

It did not take the Bucs long to notch their first goal of the match as Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) headed a ball forward from Guilherme Reis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) to freshman David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.). Geno then knocked in a breakaway goal past Winthrop's Enrique Miranda to put ETSU up 1-0 in the 4th minute.

ETSU continued to pressure the Eagle back line in the half as Schoenfeld and Geno both tested Miranda, but Miranda was up to the challenge as the score remained 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, Winthrop increased its offensive intensity forcing the Bucs to make some good stops in the back.

Reis played big defensively for the Buccaneers as he made a couple good stops on Eagle chances, as he stopped Winthrop's Andres Pullin from making a couple runs where the Eagles had numbers.

Schoenfeld put the game away in the 90th minute Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) found Schoenfeld open in the penalty area as he rocketed a shot into the back of the net from 10-yards out to make the final 2-0.

The Bucs are back in action on Monday at 6:30 p.m. as they continue the five-game home stand against Marshall. For more information on ETSU men's soccer and all other Buccaneer athletic news please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
