Saturday, August 28, 2010
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 27, 2010) - The ETSU women's soccer team picked up a hard fought 0-0 draw in double overtime against Gardner-Webb Friday night to stay undefeated on the season.
"We really played well defensively tonight picking up our first shutout of the year," said head coach Heather Henson. "We wanted to limit Gardner-Webb's chances, and we were able to do that by always having fresh legs on the field. It always feels good to stay undefeated, and despite not being able to get a goal tonight we are still on the right path to accomplish our goals this season."
The Bucs (1-0-1) outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 20-10 in the match tallying eight shots on goal to only two for GWU. ETSU also had an 8-2 advantage in corners.
In the first half, the Buccaneers fired 13 shots, but were unable to find the back of the net as they limited Gardner-Webb to four shots in the half.
ETSU had a couple opportunities in the second half, but GWU keeper Chelsea Hearne was up to the challenge as the game remained scoreless.
Junior Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.) made an incredible save in the 83rd minute spoiling a scoring chance for Megan Reimer to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs off of the board.
The Bucs put the pressure on in the two overtime periods, but were unable to get the game-winner as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Monday at 5 p.m. as the Bucs open the home season against Tennessee Wesleyan.
