Four ETSU athletes win titles in Cullowhee on Saturday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (March 27, 2010) - A pair of junior Buccaneer sprinters highlighted ETSU on Saturday as Jasmine Ingram (Frederick, Md.) and Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) both set new facility records in their respective events at the Catamount Classic. In total, four ETSU athletes won titles in Cullowhee, N.C. on Saturday.

Ironically, one Buccaneer record fell but a new one was set in the women's 400m, as Ingram clocked in at 54.50 - breaking the track facility record which was formerly held by ETSU standout Nicola Cornish (54.59 at 2005 SoCon Championships).

Meanwhile, as Ingram was setting new records in her event, James was doing the same in the 110m hurdles. James flew his way to the title and set a facility record - finishing with a time of 14-seconds. James' time broke Appalachian State's Charles Derrickson's mark of 14.25, which was set in 2007.

As Ingram and James were winning gold, freshman Ryan Beaver (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior Jarrod Burton (Bastian, Va.) captured first-place efforts in the field events.

Beaver dominated the competition in both the long and triple jumps, as the Virginia Beach, Va. native took first-place nods in both events. The freshman standout won the long jump with a leap of 22-02.50 (6.77m), while recording a mark of 46-08.25 (14.23) in the triple.

Burton, who missed the entire indoor campaign, wasted little time exploding on the scene in the throws. The senior thrower won the shot put - finishing with a top heave of 52-02.75 (15.92m).

Staying with the field events, senior Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) tied for second in the pole vault. Briggs posted a mark of 14-11 (4.55m) - tying him with Allen Kelly from Lees McRae. Also, in the men's javelin, Matt Baum (Middletown, Md.) took home third after letting one soar 174-11 (53.31m).

In the women's throws, senior Zachlynn Blackburn (Tazewell, Va.) finished third in the discus. Blackburn posted a mark of 125-02 (38.16m) in the event.

Back on the track, sophomore Quentin Greenlee (Morristown, Tenn.) returned to the outdoor scene and finished third in the 200m and fifth in 100m, respectively. Greenlee turned in a time of 21.18 in the 200 and 10.52 in the 100.

In the men's 800m, junior Manny Gonzales (Maryville, Tenn.) put together a top-5 effort after finishing with a mark of 1:54.95. Continuing in the middle distance events, senior Kenneth Rotich (Nairobi, Kenya) placed fourth in the 1500m (4:01.22).

Due to technical difficulties, meet results were not available until after press deadlines on Saturday night.

The Buccaneer track and field team returns to action next weekend when a contingent of athletes makes the trip to Gainesville to compete in the Florida Relays. In addition, a group of ETSU athletes will also travel to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Liberty Invite next Friday and Saturday as well.
