ETSU earns its third straight POY award

MACON, Ga. (April 14, 2010) - After wrapping up one of the best individual sophomore season in ETSU history Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) was named the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year the league office announced Wednesday. In total the 59th-ranked Bucs placed five players on the various All-Conference teams.

With Gille winning the honor this spring ETSU has now won three consecutive Player of the Year awards from the A-Sun (Enrique Olivares 2008, 2009), while Wednesday's accolade was the programs ninth overall.

This season Gille led the Buccaneers with a 19-5 record, while posting a team-leading 14-6 mark in dual match play. The sophomore business major posted wins against players from eight nationally ranked teams and also led ETSU in doubles victories with freshman teammate Jesus Bandres (Caracas, Venezuela). Heading into the Conference Championships this week Gille stands unbeaten in A-Sun action (10-0), having lost only one set in league play the entire season. Overall the second year student-athlete defeated No. 1 players from USC Upstate, Stetson, North Florida, Belmont and Lipscomb.

On the national stage Gille was just as effective this year with nine wins against players from ITA ranked teams. Last fall the Kuringen, Belgium native also was the only A-Sun competitor that qualified and competed in the prestigious ITA All-American Tournament in September.

In addition to his Player of the Year award Gille was one of two Bucs to be named as a member of the Atlantic Sun First-Team. Joining his teammate is junior Grega Teraz (Mojstrana, Slovenia).

Teraz - who had the league's highest ranked win against No. 26 Tennessee's Boris Conkic - rolled to a 19-12 record, while defeating players from nine ITA ranked programs. In addition to his great success this spring the junior from Mojstrana, Slovenia had a outstanding fall campaign with quarterfinal appearances at the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate and ITA Regionals.

Joining their teammates as All-Conference selections was senior Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Columbia) and sophomore Robin Akser (Ornskoldsvik, Sweden) who were named as a member of the All-Atlantic Sun Second-Team for doubles, while Bandres earned his first postseason award after being selected as an All-Freshman-Team member.

ETSU returns to action this Friday as the Bucs try to earn their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament as the A-Sun Championships get underway in DeLand, Fla.
