Jansone remains on top as Bucs look to win title on Wednesday

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (April 13, 2010) - Several players capitalized on better scoring conditions on Tuesday to make big moves in the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Golf Championship, highlighted by an ETSU women's team who turned a one-stroke deficit into a one-stroke advantage at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.

Kennesaw State currently trails the Buccaneers by just one shot, while Campbell is third and five strokes back. Third and final round action at the championships is set for Wednesday and fans can watch live scoring courtesy of Golfstat.com.

On Tuesday, senior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) led the Bucs and fired a 2-under par 70 in the second round, posting the team's low round of the day. As a squad, the Buccaneers combined to post a score of 3-over par 291, as senior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) stayed steady in her quest for a second Atlantic Sun Conference individual title, culminating her 1-over par 73 with a birdie at the 18th hole to maintain a one-stroke advantage for herself and her team after 36 holes.

"The girls are playing well," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team is aiming for its second title in three seasons after capturing the 2008 A-Sun trophy. "We will always take a 3-over score of 291, but Kennesaw State and Campbell are also playing tough. Tomorrow we have to leave it all out there and see which team is the best in this conference.

"It would be a lot of fun and a great showdown tomorrow."

While Jansone leads, the Bucs placed three other players in the top 13, with sophomore Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) tied for seventh, sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) ninth, and O'Sullivan tied for 13th.

While ETSU remained consistent, Kennesaw State and Campbell posted the day's best rounds. The Owls matched the conference single-round record with their even-par round of 288. Ket Premchuen (2-under 70) and Jordan Lazenby (1-under 71) each broke par to help Kennesaw State vault into the championship's final groups on Wednesday and leave the duo just one shot behind Jansone in the race for the medalist honor. Both players struggled on the par-3 third hole with the freshman Premchuen taking a bogey and the senior Lazenby battling through a double bogey. However, after that hiccup, each played the final 15 holes at three-under par. Kennesaw State trails leader ETSU by just a single stroke heading into the final 18 holes.

Final round play begins at 8:00am on Wednesday morning with teams starting on both No. 1 and No. 10 at Venetian Bay Golf Club. Follow all the action at GolfStat.com.
