Wednesday, May 05, 2010
MACON, Ga. (May 5, 2010) - ETSU's Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) capped his Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship career in the same fashion he opened it, with an individual title. In recognition of his win, he garnered his fifth Golfer of the Month honor.
Power, the medalist at the 2007 A-Sun Championship, opened the 2010 Championship by shooting a 3-under-par, 69 to share the first-round lead with teammate Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England). After a 2-over-par, 74 in the second round, the senior from Waterford, Ireland rallied with a third-round 5-under-par, 67 to claim a three-stroke victory. Power's effort helped ETSU fend off FGCU to claim its second team title.
Power, an accounting major, became the fifth player in the 32-year history of the championship to earn medalist honors twice, joining 1983 PGA Championship winner Hal Sutton (Centenary // 1979-80), Southeastern Louisiana's Oliver Thomson (1992, 1994), Troy's Josh Broadaway (1999, 2000) and Jacksonville's Duncan Stewart (2005-06). Power won as a freshman in 2007, starting a four-year run of Buccaneers winning the individual crown. After Power, Gareth Shaw won at the A-Sun Championship in 2008 and Michael Stewart won a season ago.
The Buccaneers and Power continue their 2010 season in NCAA Regional play. They will learn where they will play during Monday's NCAA Selection show.
