Enoch falls in final singles match, Americans claim Palmer Cup

Saturday, June 26, 2010

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (June 26, 2010) - ETSU rising senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) dropped a hard-fought singles match on the final day of the Palmer Cup Saturday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, dropping his match to American Scott Langley 1-up. Enoch finished his Palmer Cup experience 1-3 over the three-day event.

The American, who entered the day leading 9-7, ultimately claimed the Cup with a 13-11 victory. It is the first time the Americans have won in Europe since 2002, and the U.S. now leads the all-time series 7-6-1.

Enoch's match became a decisive one, as with six matches in the clubhouse only American's John Chin and Langley remained on the course for the United States. Chin had led most of his match - including 3-up after three holes - but his opponent Patrick Spraggs battled back to take the lead after No. 15. Chin evened the match after 17 putting himself into a position for either a half or a win to clinch the match for the Americans.

Langley meanwhile had led most of his match but had been holding a 1-up advantage since No. 13. While Chin and Spraggs were in the fairway on No. 18, Langley clinched the match for America, ensuring at least a half when both he and Rhys Enoch parred No. 17. Chin would go on to drop his match, 1-down, while Langley would complete his 1-up victory.

Stretching back to 1997, the Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup style competition that pits the best collegiate players from Europe against the best from the United States. Enoch is the 10th ETSU player to participate in the event.
