ETSU baseball to open conference season with USC Upstate
Thursday, March 18, 2010
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 18, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team is set to host USC Upstate in the conference home opener Friday at 6 p.m. at Cardinal Park. The two teams are slated to play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 3 p.m. to close out the series.
ETSU (10-4, 0-0 A-Sun) dropped a heart breaker to Tennessee Tech on Wednesday as the Golden Eagles won 6-5 on a walk-off hit. The Bucs are led offensively by centerfielder Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and first baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.). Scruggs leads the team in both average (.418) and doubles (8), while Hoilman leads the Atlantic Sun in home runs (8) and is first on the team in RBI (25).
The Bucs are 6-6 all-time against the Spartans. ETSU swept USC Upstate on the road last year powered by a seven RBI performance by sophomore Garrett May (Marietta, Ga.) in the final game.
The Spartans (7-11, 0-3 A-Sun) started the season with a 7-2 record, but have dropped nine straight games including three to Florida Gulf Coast a weekend ago. USC Upstate is led by Tyler Cook as he is hitting .408 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 17 RBI.
