Bucs head to Wofford; Trent named to Bench Award Watch List

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 13, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team is set to face Wofford Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

ETSU (19-12, 8-4 A-Sun) is coming off of a big conference series win in Jacksonville, Fla. over the Dolphins, as the Bucs cruised to an 11-4 win in the series finale. The Buccaneers have been riding the hot bat of Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) as he leads the conference in average (.438) and slugging (.867). As a team, ETSU has pounded out 135 extra base hits, and has driven in 51 more runs than its opponents.

 

The Bucs are 20-12 all-time against the Terriers with the last meeting between the two teams coming in 2005. ETSU is 10-7 against Wofford under head coach Tony Skole having taken seven of the last eight contests.

 

Wofford (10-21, 4-8 SoCon) comes into the contest with a 2-8 record in its last ten games after series losses to The Citadel and Western Carolina. The Terriers are led by sophomores Mac Doyle and James Foster. Doyle leads the team with a .429 average, 18 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 46 RBI, while Foster is hitting .402 with 14 doubles and a team-best nine stolen bases.

Junior Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) was one of nine catchers added to the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award Watch List announced The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Monday. The Johnny Bench Award is awarded annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character. Trent currently is hitting a career best .352 with ten doubles, nine home runs and 38 RBI.
