ETSU men's soccer places six on A-Sun All-Conference list
Thursday, November 05, 2009
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 5, 2009) - The ETSU men's soccer team had six players named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference team, which was announced by the conference office on Thursday.
"Ultimately soccer is a team game and to have over half of our starting 11 recognized by the A-Sun shows that we have a very strong team overall," said head coach Scott Calabrese.
Senior Scott Rosman (Kenner, La.) was named First Team All-Conference, as he leads the league with a 1.17 goals against average while posting five shutouts and 42 saves. Rosman earned the Defensive player of the week award on Monday for his efforts last weekend, as he helped guide the Bucs to the third seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament.
Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.), Guilherme Reis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Aaron Schoenfeld (Knoxville, Tenn.) were named Second Team All-Conference. Hoek has been impressive for the Bucs, leading the team with five goals and 11 points. The sophomore put ETSU up over second ranked North Carolina on the road, and had game-winning goals against Florida Gulf Coast and Belmont.
Reis has been a key defensive leader for a Buccaneer team that has limited its opponents to a conference best 177 shots with only 66 coming on goal. The Bucs are ranked first in the conference in goals against average and goals allowed, which is in part because of the play of Rosman and Reis.
Schoenfeld has also stepped up his game from his freshman season, netting three goals on the year including game winners against North Florida and Lipscomb. He is currently tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (2) and is second in goals (3) and points (7).
"I am pleased for Scott, Guilherme, Sean and Aaron," Calabrese said. "Their performances have helped elevate our team this year, and their recognition is well deserved."
Joining Rosman, Hoek, Reis and Schoenfeld on the All-Conference list are freshman Alesi Osorio (Austin, Texas) and Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.). Osorio and Yang were named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team after helping lead the Bucs to their first-ever conference tournament appearance.
Osorio is third on the team with two goals and six points, while Yang leads the team with three assists. Yang also netted a goal against Campbell giving him five points overall.
"Alesi and Theo both have contributed a great deal to the program," Calabrese said. "As freshmen they have played to a level which suggests they have a very bright future in the game. "
The Bucs are in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. as they host No.6 Lipscomb in the first round of the Atlantic Sun tournament. For more information on Buccaneer men's soccer or any other athletic news, please visit www.ETSUBucs.com.
