Lady Bucs host Cumberlands in exhibition opener on Sunday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 31, 2009) - After months of individual workouts and a few weeks of team practice, the ETSU women's basketball team will finally lace up the sneakers for the first time in 2009-10, as the Lady Bucs host Cumberlands on Sunday afternoon inside Memorial Center. Tip is set for 1:30 p.m.
The Lady Bucs and Patriots squared off last season in an exhibition contest, with ETSU needing a second half surge to pull out an 82-67 victory. After trailing by three at the break (39-36), ETSU outscored Cumberlands, 46-28, in the final 20 minutes to pick up the 15-point win. ETSU returns all five starters from last season's NCAA Tournament club, along with bringing in seven fresh faces - including junior college transfer Tarita Gordon (
Meanwhile, Cumberlands enters the 2009-10 season on a high note, as the Patriots claimed a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title, won the conference tournament, and made an appearance in the NAIA Elite 8. Cumberlands posted a school-record 29 wins in 2008-09, and were picked second in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Patriots return two key starters from last season's squad - Lauren Wombles and Amber Neace. Wombles, the 2009 Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year, averaged 14.5 points and a team-leading 8.3 rebounds in 34 games last season. Meanwhile, Neace led the Patriots with 15.1 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team last March. Both Wombles and Neace were also named NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans.

In addition, ETSU students who attend Sunday's contest - along with a handful of selected Lady Buccaneer games - will have a chance to win a Nintendo Wii and enter a drawing for a $1,000 cash giveaway, which will be announced at the last regular season game on Feb. 22. Each time ETSU students attend a Lady Buccaneer game, they will have an opportunity to enter the drawing for more chances to win the cash prize at the end of the season against USC Upstate.
