JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2009) - The ETSU volleyball team picked up its second straight conference win as the Bucs defeated North Florida Friday night in Brooks gym, 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 25-16).
"It was a great win tonight," said head coach Lindsey Devine. "Everyone contributed at key times. I thought we were composed as a team, and we stayed disciplined not letting our emotions overtake our purpose. When we play smart, composed and disciplined on defense we are a hard team to beat."
Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) both had double-digit kills for the Bucs as Ryan posted a team-best 12 kills, while Barber had 11. Junior Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) also had a good night with eight kills and five blocks hitting .538 in the match.
Senior Kristan Provchy (Norton, Ohio) stepped in and had a big game hitting .467 with seven kills, while Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) had a good all-around performance tallying seven kills, 43 assists, seven digs and four blocks. Jen Neice (Allen, Texas) led ETSU defensively with 15 digs.
"I am really proud of Kristan as she stepped up and showed great leadership," Devine said. "I thought Jen came up with some huge digs, and Erin executed well in her swings. Alysa continues to be a strong middle for us as she just continues to out jump our opponents. She plays so hard and opens up things for the pin players, and you can't ask any more of a middle that does that."
In the first set, play was back and forth until the Bucs used a 5-1 run to take a 13-8 advantage. UNF rallied to cut the ETSU to one point late in the set, but the Bucs held on to take the first set on an Osprey error, 25-23.
North Florida jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set. The Ospreys extend their lead to seven points at 11-4. Later in the set, the Bucs rallied to cut the UNF lead to 21-20 after a 9-3 run. ETSU tied the set at 24-all after a big kill by Youell. The Bucs then went in front 25-24 after a Barber kill, but UNF took four of the next five points to win the set 28-26 and tie the match at 1-all at the break.
There were six ties early in the third set as both team battled for the lead. With the score tied 7-7 the Buccaneers got three-straight points to take a 10-7 lead. ETSU got out to a five point lead at one point, but Ospreys rallied to cut the ETSU lead to 19-18. After trading a couple points the Bucs went on to take four-straight to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Play was tight in the fourth set as there were six ties early. With the score tied 12-all, ETSU went on a 8-2 run to go in front 20-14. The Bucs took five of the last seven points to win the set 25-16.
