Stupak and Holtzhausen stay unbeaten at Cissie Leary Invitational
Saturday, September 26, 2009
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2009) - Led by No. 98th-ranked senior Yevgeniya Stupak's (Kyiv, Ukraine) two wins during second day action of the 2009 Cissie Leary Invitational, the ETSU women's tennis team continued its hot-play inside the Lott Tennis Courts on the campus of Penn University, Saturday.
Stupak - the tournament's top seed - picked up victories over Purdue's Bhavani Tirmurti 6-0, 6-0 and Jessie Rhee of Yale, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1. With her semifinal victory the Lady Buc captain will face Yale's No. 2-seeded Vicky Brooke in Sunday's final.
"Overall, it's been a good tournament for Yevgeniya because this is the type of competition she needed to play to get better," said head coach Steve Brooks. "These girls typically play indoors a lot of times, therefore their style of play is a bit more aggressive. This forced Stupak to work on hitting shots from the baseline more, which should help her next week and at the ITA regionals later this fall."
In doubles action, Stupak along with junior teammate Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa), advanced to Sunday's four final as they made quick work of the Penn doubles team of Anderson and Wolf, 8-2. With the win the ETSU duo will now face fourth seeded Rabot and Sammons of Purdue in Sunday's semifinal.
