Lady Bucs pick up eight wins during day two action of Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va.  (Oct. 3, 2009) - After strong performances Friday the ETSU women's tennis team continued it outstanding play during day two action of the Hokie Fall Invitational Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

 

Sophomore Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) earned her first win of the weekend, with a strong 6-4, 7-6 (7), victory over Virginia Berry of Davidson. With the win Kedzo will advance to Sunday's consolation Flight A bracket, where the 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team member will take on Petera Dajectiv of Radford, Sunday.

 

Also earning singles wins was juniors Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) in the Flight B bracket. Holtzhausen defeated Mia Drobnjak of Radford, while Voinea earned a quick 6-0, 6-0, victory over Mirana Matic also from the Highlanders.

 

Freshman Miranda Cameron (Lenior City, Tenn.) contiuned the Lady Bucs winning ways as the ETSU newcomer defeated Appalachian State's Amanda Cashm 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5). The local East Tennessee product will now face Sarah Tegner of Radford, Sunday.

 

"Today was a complete team effort," said assistant coach Travis Sandlant. "Every girl on our entire roster played hard and competed to best of their abilities." 

 

In doubles action Holtzhausen and junior teammate Diana Navrostskay (Livi, Ukraine), earned a trip to Sunday's consolation Flight A doubles final, as the Lady Buc duo dropped the Davidson team of Berry and Synn 8-4 in the quarterfinals and Wofford's duo of Abutovic and Wilkerson in the semifinals.

 

Also picking up wins in pairs competition was the Lady Buc team of Cameron and Voinea. Playing for the first time together this fall, the ETSU duo dropped the Appalachian State's team of Cash and Jenke, in addition to topping Dicconson and Percina of Elon.
