CINCINNATI, Ohio (Oct. 24, 2009) - Despite back-to-back record setting days the ETSU women's tennis team fell just short of Sunday's final after head coach Steve Brooks' squad dropped three matches to in-state rival Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at the 2009 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"This week we made good strides against some quality competition," said Brooks. "Anytime you lose its disappointing, however I'm proud of the girls in how they competed and gave great effort. To have two teams only points away from making the semifinals is something special"

In doubles action the ETSU team of sophomores Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain), and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela), fell to the Commodore squad of Hannah Blatt and Catherine Newman in a close 9-8 quarterfinal contest. In fact the Lady Buc duo had one match point in the tiebreaker, but unfortunately for ETSU Vanderbilt would not go down.

"Paula and Karina played well this weekend," Brooks said. "Karina played through some sickness today, but kept batting. I hate that we couldn't close out the match after match point, but give Vandy credit. They're a great ranked program and got the job done when they had to."

Also in doubles action the ETSU duo of senior Yevgenyia Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine), and junior Kelly Holtzhausen (Johannesburg, South Africa), fell to the No. 3 seeded Vanderbilt team of Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu in the second doubles tiebreaker, 9-8.

In singles action Stupak fell to No. 46-ranked - No. 9 seeded - Catherine Newman of Vandy in long three set Round of 16 match inside the Cincinnati Fitness and Athletic Club.

Now with the regional closed ETSU returns to action with its final fall tournament of the season November 6 at the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville.
