JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 11, 2009) - After earning its second NCAA Tournament appearance and winning both the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships this past spring, the ETSU women's tennis team continued to add to its trophy case, this time in the classroom, as the Lady Bucs were honored as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic team for the 2009 season, the ITA announced Tuesday.

As a team ETSU posted a 3.5 GPA this past year, with six members of the squad earning ITA Scholar Athletes awards for excellence. Overall, this marks the fifth time in the last six years that head coach Steve Brooks' players have been announced as an ITA All-Academic team.

"I'm very proud of this past year's team," said Brooks. "I give all the credit to our girls, they were a great group that achieved some much for this program and I'm pleased that all their hard work is being honored with this award."

Individually, former ETSU senior Tara Byrne (Johnson City) led the Lady Bucs in the classroom with a 3.97 GPA, while returning players Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) 3.96, Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) 3.94, Paula Jaime (Madrid, Spain) 3.85, Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) 3.84 and Karina Kedzo (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) 3.68, all posted high GPA's in 2009.

"It's great to see all our girls have a record year in the classroom," said Brooks. "Bob Baker and his staff does an excellent job supporting our team and helping the girls improve in the classroom throughout their career at ETSU. Our goal is to win championships and produce great players on the court, but more importantly we want our players to leave ETSU with a great education and their degree."

ETSU was one of only two A-Sun women's tennis teams to be named as a 2009 ITA All-Academic team, league rival Kennesaw State being the other.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
