ETSU Baseball goes to bat for child abuse awareness

Thursday, April 23, 2009

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 23, 2009) - The ETSU baseball team, Kappa Delta Sorority and the 1st Judicial District Children's Advocacy Center are teaming up to host the second annual Baseball Blue Day on April 25 as the Bucs host High Point at Cardinal Park at 2 p.m.

Baseball Blue Day is being held in conjunction with the April observation of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Its goal is to help prevent child abuse by raising awareness and support for the work going on locally to end it.

"We are very excited to be teaming up in the support of the Children's Advocacy Center," said head coach Tony Skole. "Our program has always been involved with the youth of our community, and this is for an outstanding cause that we are proud to be associated with."

"It is a great opportunity to increase awareness regarding the unspeakable crime of child abuse," said Sara Hacker, marketing and promotions coordinator of ETSU athletics. "It shouldn't hurt to be a child."

Gates open at 1 p.m. and there will be free admission for all children, pre-game tours of Cardinal Park, a meet-and-greet session with the players, a postgame balloon launch, games, prizes and other family-oriented activities.

"ETSU athletics is committed to improving life in our regions, and we are honored to participate in this most worthy cause," said Amber Birdwell, education training coordinator for ETSU athletics. "Baseball Blue Day is not only a great opportunity for us to show our support for Child Abuse Prevention Month, but also a great time to build relationships with our families and communities."

For more information about the day and the center's work, call the center at 926-6528 or visit www.childrensadvocacycenter.net.
