ETSU baseball completes sweep of USC Upstate on May grand slam

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 18, 2009) - A seven RBI performance by Garrett May (Roswell, Ga.) propelled the ETSU baseball team to a 14-12 comeback win in game two of a doubleheader Saturday as the Bucs completed the sweep of USC Upstate at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

The Bucs won the first game of the doubleheader by the score of 11-3 to improve to 18-19 overall and 9-12 in conference. USC Upstate falls to 10-28 and 3-18 in league play.

 

Freshman Josh Gonzaga (Davie, Fla.) picked up his second win of the season in the opener, as he went 7.0 innings allowing just three runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Fern was tabbed with the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings to fall to 1-5.

 

Sophomore Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) got the win in the second game as he picked up his first career win in an ETSU uniform, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings and surrendered four hits. Tyler McCraney (1-5) earned the loss in game two, as he gave up five run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

 

The Bucs were led offensively by May and Danny Petro (Atlanta, Ga.) as May was 3-for-8 with a double, triple, home run, scored four runs and drove in seven, while Petro was 4-for-8 with a double and a home run, three runs scored and four RBI.

 

In the first game the Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an Eric Guillen RBI single.

 

ETSU answered in the top of the third as right fielder Jacob Fabry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) singled in May to tie the game at 1-all. In the next at bat, third baseman Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) gave the Bucs a 3-1 lead as he homered for the 10th time on the year, sending a two-run shot over the fence in right-center.

 

Reeder added another run for the Buccaneers in the top of the fifth as he powered his second home run of the game over the fence in left to make the score 4-1.

 

Jimmy Tanner cut into the ETSU lead in the bottom of the fifth as she doubled in a run to cut the Bucs lead to 4-2. USC Upstate scored another run in the inning on a RBI double by Jeff Medley to pull within one run.

 

The Bucs scored three runs in the top of the sixth as Fabry came up with the bases load and doubled off of the wall in left to clear the bases and give the Bucs a 7-3 lead. Fabry then came in to score on a wild pitch by Teddy Fallon to increase the ETSU lead to 8-3.

 

ETSU scored three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Petro and a USC Upstate error to take an 11-3 lead.

 

Senior Dustin Plumlee (Powell, Tenn.) came in and shut the door on the Spartans as he went 2.0 scoreless innings and faced the minimum.

 

In the second game, the Bucs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as the designated hitter Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in first baseman Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) on an RBI single to center. Later in the inning Trent came in to score on an error by shortstop Austin Liput to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead.

 

Hoilman homered in the top of the third as he drove his seventh home run of the season over the fence in right-center to make the score 3-0. The Bucs added three more runs in the inning on a three-run homer to right center by Petro in increase the Buccaneer lead to 6-0.

 

The Spartans cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan Wilkins tripled in three runs to bring the score to 6-3 ETSU. USC Upstate added three more runs in the inning on an RBI ground out to second by Austin Moyer and a RBI single by Kyle Simpson and a Fabry error to tie the game at 6-all.

 

Wilkins gave USC Upstate an 8-6 lead on a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth.

 

USC Upstate added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Moyer two-run double and a Tanner two-run single to make the score 12-6 Spartans.

 

In the top of the eighth, with the bases loaded May tripled off of the wall in right center to clear the bases and narrow the USC Upstate lead to 12-9. Reeder added another run in the inning as he drove in May on a grounder to second, which cut the Spartans lead to 12-10.

 

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, May took a 1-2 slider and crushed it over the fence in center for a grand slam to give the Bucs a 14-12 lead.

 

Reeder came in, in the ninth and got three straight outs to give the Bucs the win and collected his first save of the year.
