ASHEVILLE, N.C. (August 24, 2008) -An early first half goal by junior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas) proved to be enough as the ETSU women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2008 season defeating UNC Asheville, 1-0, Sunday at Greenwood Field.

The Bucs open the scoring after Monty took advantage of a Bulldog turnover and fired home the game-winning goal from around 10 yards out, with just over eight minutes off the clock. Despite defending eight shots in the contest, the Bucs defense held on to preserve the shutout, improving ETSU to 1-0 on the season.

"UNC Asheville is a great offensive team and for us to not allow a goal is something that I'm very excited about," head coach Heather Henson said. "Our back four defenders did an excellent job staying disciplined and stopping some quality scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs. I thought we did a good job counterattacking their offensive sets and I think Megan (Masch) (Virginia Beach, VA), really stepped-up and cleaned up some shots on some of their corner kicks."

Despite the pressure of holding on to a one goal lead, ETSU managed to outshoot the Bulldogs, 10-8, with UNC Asheville claiming a slight advantage in corner kicks 6-4. Defensively, Masch stopped all five UNC Asheville shots on goal, including a header by UNC Asheville senior forward Robyn Busha with 35 seconds to play to preserve her first career shutout.

"UNC Asheville is a great team and for us to go on the road and pick up the victory to open the year is something that's going to help us build some early confidence this season," said Henson. "One of the hardest things to do is to score a quick goal early and then have to defend like crazy to keep that lead the rest of the game. Despite the pressure by UNC Asheville's offense the last 82 minutes of the game I'm proud of the effort our defense gave today."

ETSU returns to action with its home opener against Morehead State, next Sunday at 2 p.m., at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
