KENNESAW, Ga. (Dec. 17, 2008) - On Thursday night two of the league's preseason favorites will hit the hardwood, when the Lady Bucs travel to the Peach State to take on Kennesaw State in an early conference battle. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the KSU Convocation Center.
ETSU was tabbed the preseason favorite in both the coaches and media polls, but the Lady Bucs looked anything but that in their conference opener at Mercer two weeks ago.
Mercer stunned the Lady Bucs, 77-61, in that contest; however, ETSU responded in a big way last Friday night in Lexington. The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 16-point lead at Kentucky and hung on to win 59-50 inside Memorial Coliseum. Junior TaRonda Wiles (Danville, Va.) led the way with a game-high 19 points, while fellow junior and preseason all-conference selection Siarre Evans (Griffin, Ga.) recorded her 19th career double-double (10 points and 16 rebounds). The win also marked the third time in the last four years head coach Karen Kemp has guided the Lady Bucs to a win over a SEC program.
The Lady Buccaneers will now look to head into their Christmas break with back-to-back victories. A win over Kennesaw State won't come easy, but should ETSU pull off its second straight road win, the Lady Bucs will then improve to 6-0 lifetime against the Lady Owls. ETSU defeated Kennesaw State, 81-77, in its lone meeting last year inside Memorial Center.
Kennesaw State - who was picked second by the conference coaches - enters Thursday's contest on a three-game winning streak. After dropping their first four games to start the season the Lady Owls have defeated Troy, USC Upstate and Georgia Southern. In its Monday night win over the Eagles (82-61), junior guard Gia Lockett went off for a career-high 36 points in only 26 minutes of work. The Lady Owls outscored Georgia Southern by 21 points in the first half, 42-21, and both teams played even in the final 20 minutes. Fellow junior guard Greteya Kelley leads the Lady Owls in scoring (12.1) and steals (2.7), while Preseason Conference Player of the Year, Britteny Henderson, is posting 10 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest.
