No. 18 Olivares draws No. 102 Martin Sayer of Radford during first round play of the NCAA Singles Championship

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (May 19, 2009) - A year after marching into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Singles Championship ETSU men's tennis senior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) will take his first step to his second straight run against the field as Buc captain swings into action against No. 102-ranked Martin Sayer of Radford with a 1:30 p.m. match Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.

The No. 18-ranked Olivares earned a spot among the nation's elite players, after the two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year automatically qualified for the tournament due to his top-20 ITA ranking. A 2008 ITA All-American, Olivares  helped guide the No. 63-ranked Bucs to its third straight A-Sun title, while posting a remarkable 31-10 record as the highest ranked singles player in A-Sun history.

Overall, this season Olivares has simply been at his best when playing some of the top singles players in the ITA. This past fall the second winningest player in school history (114 career victories) won the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate at the University of Georgia, while also finishing runner-up at the UVA Ranked Plus One Intercollegiate. In addition to the two national tournaments, Olivares continued to show why he's among one of the top players in the country at both the elite qualified ITA National Indoor and D'Novo ITA All-American Championships.

Sayer enters the tournament after leading Radford to its second straight NCAA Regional appearances in Knoxville two weeks ago. Overall, the four-time Big South Player of the Year and first-team member, looks to capitalize after a strong season for the Highlanders. Radford's all-time winningest player (113 career victories) boasts a 17-12 mark against nationally ranked players, including going 2-2 this spring.

The winner of the Olivares/Sayer match will face the victor of Bradley Klahn (Stanford) and Steven Moneke (Ohio State) in the Round of 32, Thursday.
