JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 17, 2009) - Head ETSU softball coach Andrea Mangrum and her staff added depth to its pitching rotation on Wednesday afternoon, as they announced Jessica Duncan (Ooltewah, Tenn.) has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Lady Bucs in 2009-10.

Duncan, a right-handed pitcher from Chattanooga State, helped guide the Tigers to their first-ever #1 ranking in the NJCAA Poll, a FCCJ Tournament title, and a 60-win campaign in 2009. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native posted a perfect season in the circle - going 13-0 with a 1.32 ERA (20 ER/105.2 IP). Duncan made 30 appearances (19 starts), while tossing five shutouts and picking up two saves. The TJCAA All-Academic selection also helped Chattanooga State at the plate, where she hit a blistering .456 (31-for-68) with 11 runs scored and 13 stolen bases (14 attempts). Duncan posted 10 multi-hit games - including a season-high 3-for-4 effort against Florence on March 13. As a freshman, Duncan was 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA (4 ER/28.0 IP).

"Jessica brings athleticism to the circle and she is also a left-handed slapper with a lot of speed," said Mangrum. "This will add depth to three parts of our program, because when she does not pitch she can play outfield and has the speed on the base path to help us offensively. She has been at a great program for the past two years and has matured as a player under Coach Beth Randolph at Chattanooga State."

Duncan joins an experienced Lady Buccaneer pitching staff which includes seniors Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) and Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) along with sophomore Shelby Morris (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). Led by the ace of the staff, Hardy, and Lady Buccaneer pitching coach Ariel Beus, ETSU broke six single-season records in 2009. ETSU set school records in ERA (2.23), hits (337), runs (153), earned runs (119), and opponent batting average (.240); while also tossing a program best 15 shutouts. Over the last two seasons the Lady Bucs have broke nine single-season pitching records - including wins (30), strikeouts (353), and appearances (63).

The signing of Duncan concludes the 2009-10 recruiting class for the Lady Bucs which includes Arielle Garner (Buchanan, Ga.), Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.), Whitley Hensley (Erwin, Tenn.), Sammie Lower (Sebring, Fla.), Lucy Schneider (Dade City, Fla.) and Mikayla Treadway (Unicoi, Tenn.).

"Jessica concludes our 2009-2010 signing class," added Mangrum. "Our staff is very excited about the chemistry and talent we will have this upcoming season."
