Bucs fall to Bears in overtime, 1-0

Friday, October 19, 2007

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 19, 2007) - The ETSU women's soccer team fell to the Mercer Bears, 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Bucs fall to 6-5-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the A-Sun, while the Bears improve to 8-5-1, 6-1-0.

During the first half the Bucs and Bears battled for the early lead while ETSU outshot the Bears, 7-1, including a shot on goal by Katie Green (Knoxville, Tenn.) that was deflected at the goal line by Mercer's Raschelle Riley, but remained in a 0-0 deadlock going into halftime.

In the second period both teams continued to battle it out but were unable to convert to force the match into overtime.

Three minutes into the first overtime period an ETSU defender accidentally scored an own goal for the Bears to end the match.

Green led the Bucs offensively with five shots on the night, while newcomer Morgan Jutras (Colleyville, Texas) contributed three. The Bucs outshot Mercer 10-4 and earned five corner kicks to Mercer's three. Rachel Van Horn (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was in goal for the Bucs making two saves on the night.

"It was a very good game in the field but we just weren't able to convert on a lot of opportunities. Mercer really came in wanting to solidify their second place standing in the conference rankings," said head coach Heather Henson. "Mercer's keeper is outstanding and made some great saves. We were just unlucky with what happened at the end."

The Bucs will be back in action on Sunday as they host league-leading Kennesaw State in the A-Sun Game of the Week. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
