JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 27, 2007) - ETSU women's tennis star Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) was recognized for her achievements both on and off the court, as she received the Atlantic Sun NCAA Woman of the Year award Tuesday afternoon.

"Masha was a leader for our program both on and off the court," said head ETSU women's tennis coach Steve Brooks. "She was a tough competitor and excellent student-athlete."

During her ETSU playing career (2003-07), Ilina was unstoppable and created an impressive resume.

She currently holds the Buccaneer career singles wins record, and became the first female tennis player in school history to ever reach 100-plus victories mark. For her career, Ilina posted 103 total wins as she went on to tie the ETSU record for most singles wins in a season at 28, after only her freshman year.

"She has been the most valuable part of the team's success while playing here at ETSU," mentioned Brooks.

To go along with her highly touted statistics, Ilina also received numerous awards for her stellar play.

In 2007, the native from Kyiv, Ukraine, received First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors, A-Sun Player of the Week accolades, and the ETSU women's tennis Athletic MVP award. Ilina was named 2006 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, after finishing the campaign with a remarkable 27 wins, and was also voted to the First Team all-conference list.

Ilina, who graduated with her B.S. in Finance in three years, is currently enrolled in ETSU's MBA program.

"It takes a very dedicated student to finish her degree in only three years when concentrating on a difficult course load," added Brooks. "She takes her studies seriously and she is proving that by currently working on her MBA."

The NCAA committee selected its Woman of the Year candidates by using three areas of emphasis, which included community leadership, academics, and athletics.
