Lady Bucs defeat Gardner-Webb, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 6, 2008) - The ETSU women's tennis team dropped Gardner-Webb, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the victory the Lady Bucs improve to 12-8 overall and 8-2 in conference action while the Bulldogs fall to 7-13, 3-7.

 

In doubles ETSU claimed the point as the duo of Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Laura Kriett and Monica Walser, 8-5 in the top position. In the No. 2 slot, Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) dropped Amy Beavers and Jenny Gomez, 8-5. In the third slot Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) cruised past Rita Gouveia and Nicole Scates, 8-2.

 

In No. 1 singles Tara Byrne defeated Laura Kriett, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 while Olya Batsula dropped Jenny Gomez, 6-1, 6-7, 6-0 in the second position. In the No. 3 slot Elena Volobueva defeated Rita Gouveia, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 while Andra Voinea (Brasov, Romania) dropped Amy Beavers, 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth slot. Competing in the No. 6 position Whitney Trotter defeated Allie Mills, 6-4, 6-4.

 

Gardner-Webb picked up their lone point as Monica Walser defeated Vita Moskaliova, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the No. 5 position.

 

"It was a good match for everybody. Gardner-Webb played really tough today and we had to fight and fight hard to win most of the matches," said head coach Steve Brooks.

 

The Lady Bucs will wrap up Atlantic Sun play on April 9 as they host USC Upstate. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. Follow all ETSU women's tennis action at www.ETSUBucs.com.
