GREENVILLE, S.C. (Oct. 19, 2007) - The ETSU women's golf team posted an opening round 299 to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes in the Lady Paladin Invitational Friday at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

During a first round plagued by wind and rain, sophomore Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) posted a season low round, carding a one-under 71, while senior Maria Ringdahl (Oland Sweden)( notched an even-par 72 to give the Buccaneers a one-stroke advantage over the TCU Horned Frogs on the par-72, 6,288-yard course.

Carmen Perez-Narbon of UNC Wilmington grabbed the individual lead shooting 33 on the front nine on her way to a two-under-par 70. She leads Jansone by one stroke with three players tied for third at even-par.

"We really carried over our strong play from our last tournament into this one," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Reynolds Shelton, whose team is coming off a second place finish earlier this week in the Aztec Fall Classic in San Diego.  "This is a really competitive field with 10 teams ranked higher than we are, including Northwestern which has been a consistent Top 20 team. I've known this is what the team is capable of and I'm glad to see them realizing that potential."

Along with Jansone and Ringdahl, junior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales) finished tied for 18th with a 5-over 77, while senior Natalia Giraldo (Cali, Colombia) tied for 42nd after the first day.

The 18-team field will resume play Saturday with the first tee times set for 8:30 a.m.  Final round action is scheduled for a shotgun start on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Visit ETSUBucs.com at the end of each day's play for a complete report.
