RIO GRANDE, P.R. (Feb. 29, 2008) - Senior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) and freshman Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) both posted sub-par scores during Friday's first round in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course, helping the ETSU men's golf team to a third place standing in a field dominated by some of the nation's best collegiate teams.

The 24th-ranked Buccaneers are currently tied for third at 1-over-par 289, five strokes off the pace of both No. 16 Clemson and No. 4 Oklahoma State, which are each at 4-under for the event. The Bucs are tied with No. 2 Alabama, and currently ahead of teams such as No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Georgia Tech and No. 13 Duke.

On the individual leaderboard, Shaw is currently tied for sixth after firing a 2-under-par 70 on day one, while Enoch is tied for 11th at 1-under. Other ETSU results included a 1-over 73 for senior Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland), and a 3-over 75 by sophomore Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland). Chesson Hadley of Georgia Tech, the nation's No. 6 player, and Matthew Swan of Alabama are the clubhouse leaders after the first day. Both Hadley and Swan shot six-under par 66.

"We played a pretty solid round as a team," said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. "We didn't have any really low scores, but we didn't do anything really bad either. Gareth and Rhys hit it very well, but in truth it could have been a lot better. Both Rhys and Seamus could been in the 60s if a couple breaks go their way. But all in all, we're looking forward to playing tomorrow and trying to improve on what was a good day."

The Bucs will continue with second round play from Puerto Rico scheduled for Saturday, followed by third and final round action on Sunday. For more on ETSU men's golf and updates following Saturday's second round, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the men's golf link.
