ETSU women's soccer downed by Highlanders, 3-1

RADFORD, Va. (September 3, 2006) - The ETSU women's soccer team was dealt another tough loss by Radford on Sunday afternoon, 3-1, at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. The Bucs drop to 0-4-0 on the season, while the Highlanders improve to 1-2-0.

During first half Radford put the pressure on the Bucs as they scored twice to give the Highlanders a 2-0 advantage going into halftime. Lisa Channon scored first for Radford when she found the back of the net on a free kick at the 12:36 mark. The second goal came 18 minutes later as Justine Dugger took a cross from Jill Boyer and sent the kick over keeper Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.).

The Bucs continued to struggle offensively, as Radford outshot ETSU 11-3, firing off six shots before Meredith Goldman (Knoxville, Tenn.) made a shot-on-goal at the 16:39 mark.

The Bucs came out strong in the second half, as Fulcher scored her first goal of the season just three minutes into play. ETSU outshot Radford 10-7 in the second period, but the Highlanders were able to increase their lead with a score from McKenzie Vergara at the 79:24 mark.

At the 87:02 mark, Fulcher once again found the back of the net, but a questionable off-sides call against ETSU forced the turnover of the goal and the Highlanders were able to hold ETSU off for the remainder of the game.

"We just didn't come out ready to play in the first half," said head coach Heather Henson. "So during halftime, we looked to do two things in the second half; we looked to win the ball defensively and to find our feet quicker and we were able to do that. We created those goals which led to more attacking opportunities for us. On the second goal, the ruling just didn't go our way."

The Bucs are back in action Friday, September 8, as they travel to Martin, Tenn. to compete in the UT-Martin tournament. They are set to face UT-Martin at 4 p.m. (CST) and Murray State on Sunday, September 10 at noon.
