Lady Bucs tennis breezes by Eastern Kentucky, 7-0; Murry State, 6-1

RICHMOND, Ky. (January 19, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team defeated Ohio Valley Conference foes Eastern Kentucky and Murry State today as they opened their spring play. They defeated the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 7-0 before defeating Murry State, 6-1.

 

In doubles action, newcomers Whitney Trotter (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Brittany Stewart (Nashville, Tenn.) defeated Casie Phillips and Page Ashby, 8-0 in the No. 3 position, while Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Lucia Vojtkova and Jemma Euers, 8-4 in the No. 2 position. Competing in No. 1 doubles, Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Alexandra Sitnikova and Svetlana Pimenova 8-4

 

Junior Elena Volobueva earned the second point for the Lady Bucs in singles action, as she defeated Jemma Euers in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Stupak defeated Lucia Vojtkova, 6-1, 7-5.

 

With the 3-0 lead, senior Masha Ilina defeated Svetlana Pimenova 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles position to give ETSU the 4-0 advantage. Sophomore Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Alexandra Sitnikova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 position, while Trotter defeated Casie Phillips, 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 5 position. Brittany Stewart completed the sweep for the Lady Bucs as she blanked Page Ashby, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 slot.

 

The Lady Bucs then traveled to Lexington where they faced the Murry State Racers. In the doubles, Stupak and Ilina fell to Anna and Rachael Lask, 8-5 in the No. 1 slot. Competing in the No. 2 position Byrne and Batsula defeated Anne Pennington and Casady Pruitt, 8-2, while Volobueva and Moskaliova defeated Angela McGahee and Lynsey Bochenek, 8-4.

 

In singles action, Tara Byrne fell to Anna Lask, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 position, while Batsula defeated Rachael Lask in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Yevgeniya Stupak defeated Angela McGahee in the No. 3 position, 7-6 (4), 6-1, as Ilina defeated Casady Pruitt, 6-2, 6-4.

 

Competing in the No. 5 position Elena Volobueva defeated Adriana Alvarez, 6-1, 6-3 and Vita Moskaliova defeated Lyndsay Ottosen, 6-2, 6-1.

 

"Overall I thought we played good," said head coach Steve Brooks. "I think the girls were a little tight in their first two matches as they are working their way back into playing. I also think they are a little nervous as they are looking forward to playing No. 19 Kentucky tomorrow."

 

The Lady Bucs will continue their 10-match road swing as they face the Wildcats of Kentucky. The match is set to begin at Noon.
