BUIES CREEK, N.C. (March 24, 2007) - The ETSU women's tennis team took on conference opponent Campbell University today in Buies Creek, N.C. and claimed a convincing 7-0 victory. The Lady Bucs now improve to 3-1 in conference play. The Camels fall to 14-4 and 5-3 in conference play.

 

In doubles play ETSU got out to a strong start in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) won the first doubles match against Ana Suriladze and Nina Suriladez in the No. 2 position 8-4, while Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) secured the doubles point for ETSU winning in the No. 1 position 8-4 over Scarlet Alfonze and Blanca Saenz. In the No. 3 position Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) fought to a tiebreaker before eventually falling 9-8 (5) to Iva Stojancer and Liza Bensimon.

 

In singles action Elena Volobueva took a convincing win in the No. 5 position defeating Liza Bensimon 6-0, 6-2. Yevgeniya Stupak put ETSU up 3-0 in the match defeating Blanca Saenz 6-1, 6-1 in the second position, and it was Sophomore Tara Byrne who secured the victory for the Lady Bucs with her win at No. 4 over Iva Stojancer 6-4, 6-2.

 

Closely following Olya Batsula got through a close first set before putting her opponent away decisively in the second. She won 7-6 (2), 6-0 against Ana Suriladze in the third slot. Masha Ilina was successful in her three set match in the top spot for ETSU, defeating Scarlet Alfonzo 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. Vita Moskaliova made sure of the 7-0 win for ETSU as she battled through a third set tiebreaker and came out on top. She defeated Nina Surviladze 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (5).

 

"We plated well today and I am really happy with the win Campbell are a good team," said head coach Steve Brooks. "If we keep building on what we did today, we will be in good shape come conference time."

 

The Lady Bucs will remain in North Carolina to take on UNC-Greensboro tomorrow, Sunday, March 25 at noon.
