Bucs tennis defeats Belmont, 7-0; UVA-Wise, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (February 3, 2007) - The No. 46 ranked ETSU men's tennis team continued their winning ways as they defeated conference foe Belmont, 7-0 and UVA-Wise, 6-1 at the ETSU Tennis Center on Saturday. The Bucs improve to 6-1 on the season as Belmont falls to 0-1 and UVA-Wise falls to 0-1.

 

The Bucs looked to earn revenge as they took on the Belmont Bruins who defeated them in the conference tournament last season. In doubles action, Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata, Argentina) defeated Javier Rodriguez and Fausto Rocha in the No. 1 slot, 8-4 as Travis Sandlant (Werribee, Australia) and Alex Ahlgren (Tyreso, Sweden) defeated Alex Gillott and Ignacio Gesto, 8-3 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 doubles, Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) and Sebastian Serrano (Cartagena, Colombia) defeated Zach Zola and Felipe Abreu, 8-0.

 

In singles, the Bucs continued their sweep of the Bruins. Senior Felix Insaurralde defeated Alex Gillott, 7-6 before Gillott retired in the No. 1 position while Enrique Olivares defeated Javier Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 singles, Predrag Burmazovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) eased past his opponent Zach Zola, 6-0, 6-0 as Sebastian Serrano defeated Fausto Rocha, 6-0, 7-6. Lisandro Picardo defeated Felipe Abreu in the fifth position 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 6 singles, Travis Sandlant defeated Ignacio Gesto 6-1, 7-6.

 

In their afternoon match ETSU took on the UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers. ETSU claimed the doubles point as Olivares and Serrano defeated Henning Kuich and Derick Wood, 8-2 in the No. 1 position, while Burmazovic and Ricardo Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela) defeated Chris Kostic and Robert Bareford, 8-0 in the No. 2 slot. In the No. 3 position, Ahlgren and Daniel Isaza (Medellin, Colombia) defeated Daniel Robinson and Wes Sturgill, 8-1.

 

Competing in No. 1 singles Rojas fell to Henning Kuich after a hard fought match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. In the second position Isaza defeated Derick Wood, 6-2, 6-0 as Olivares breezed by Chris Kostic, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 slot. In the No. 4 position Sandlant defeated Robert Bareford, 6-0, 6-1. Burmazovic defeated Daniel Robinson, 6-0, 6-0 and Ahlgren defeated Wes Sturgill, 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth and sixth positions.

 

Continuing play tomorrow the Bucs will play Lipscomb at 10 a.m. before taking on Virginia Intermont at 2 p.m.
