ETSU softball participates in community service event with Special Olympics

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 20, 2006) - Members of the the Lady Bucs softball team spent Friday morning teaching a group from Science Hill Special Olympics the fundamentals of softball. The clinic was held in Memorial Center, where the team became Buccaneers for a day, learning the basics of hitting, throwing, catching and teamwork. This clinic is one of many being held for Special Olympics, as they will be able to continue learning and participating in the sport.

"I am glad my girls get exposed to this type of environment so they don't take things for granted being collegiate athletes," said head coach Andrea Mangrum. "I have passion for the group that was here today, because they had a lot fun out there and were eager to learn.

This was one of many community service events the ETSU softball team will be helping out with this year. Next Wednesday the Lady Bucs will be visiting an elementary school in nearby Erwin, where they will be helping children with their schoolwork and various projects.

The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
