Campbell knocks Softball Bucs out of A-Sun Tournament, 3-0
Friday, May 11, 2007
The Camels threatened in the top of the first as lead off hitter Jessica Huffman singled to left and stole second, but Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) forced the next three Campbell hitters out, leaving Huffman stranded at third.
After Gilbert retired seven straight hitters, Campbell's Stephenie Pappas reached on an infield single in third as Stephanie Gaynord's (Manassas, Va.) throw from short took Mary Catherine Vercoe's (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) foot off the base. Gilbert then struck out Huffman, but after walking Megan Paul, the Camels Courtney Quinn came through with a clutch two-out triple, which scored the two runs.
For the second straight inning ETSU's leadoff hitter reached base as Kate Powell (Johnson City) laid down a perfect bunt in the third, but Cheniece Cason's (Moreno Valley, Calif.) sharp liner to third was snagged by Cullum, forcing Powell to get doubled up at first.
Gilbert did an excellent job working out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the fourth, forcing Huffman to ground into a fielder's choice, and got Paul out on strikes for the second time of the afternoon to end the inning.
ETSU posted scoring threats in the fourth and fifth but came away empty. In the fourth, Veroce recorded her second hit of the game with a single up the middle, and a two-out walk to Amanda Haverman (
Caviness put a stop to any more of ETSU's scoring chances as she retired the final seven Bucs batters to end the game.
Gilbert posted her 14th complete game of the season, but ended her rookie campaign with a 10-14 mark, allowing three runs on eight hits and tying her career-high with six strikeouts. Caviness recorded her eighth shutout of the season and moved to 15-23.
