Both Davies, Shaw finish strong at World Amateur Team Championship

             STELLENBOSCH, South Africa (Oct. 29, 2006) - ETSU senior and two-time, first-team All-American Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) fired his second-straight sub-par round with a 1-under 71 Sunday in the final round of the World Amateur Team Championships at the Stellenbosch Golf Club.

 

            Davies - who posted an impressive 8-under-par 64 on Saturday - finished tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard at 4-under for the event. Meanwhile, he helped his Welsh team to a fourth place finish, five strokes back of team champion the Netherlands which finished at 22-under. Wil Besseling made it a sweep for the Netherlands, taking the individual championship with a final score of 13-under 275.

 

            Along with Davies, ETSU junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) helped the Irish to a tie for ninth on the team leaderboard at 12-under. Individually, Shaw posted a final round score of 1-over-par 73 to tie for 39th and end the championship at even par.

 

            In the World Amateur Team Championships, each team consists of two or three golfers, with the two lowest individual scores of each day becoming the team's aggregate score. The teams from Wales and Ireland both have three players attending the event. The 72-hole event consist of 74 teams competing for the coveted Eisenhower Trophy.
