Johnson City, Tenn. (Jan. 6, 2006) - ETSU head baseball coach Tony Skole announced that Trey Sheffield (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) has joined the team after transferring from the University of Georgia.  A redshirt freshman, Sheffield will be eligible to compete for the Bucs this spring.

A 2004 Milton High School graduate, Sheffield enrolled at UGA and redshirted last season before deciding to transfer to ETSU.  A three-year starter in high school, he served as team captain on his senior year team that compiled a 29-7 record and the Class-AAAAA state title.  He was 10-1 with a 2.12 earned-run average as a senior, with one of his wins a no-hitter against Atlanta area rival Lassiter in the state playoffs.

Sheffield also excelled at the plate batting .353 with seven homeruns during his senior campaign.  He took his offensive game to another level during the state playoffs, belting five of his seven homeruns during Milton's 10-0 march to the state title.

"I am very excited about Trey," said Skole.  "He will make an immediate impact and contribution to our program.  Trey has a lot of experience and has pitched very well in many big games throughout his career.  He is a fierce competitor who can flat out pitch the baseball.  Our program is going to be a great fit for him and our fans will enjoy watching this young man take the mound this spring.  We are glad Trey Sheffield is a Buccaneer."

In 2003 as a member of the East Cobb Yankees summer league squad, Sheffield ran up a perfect 4-0 record and recorded three saves while striking out 30 batters and compiling a miniscule 1.78 ERA in 31.1 innings of work.  The Yankees went on to claim the 2003 Connie Mack World Championship.  He posted an even more impressive 2004 season with the Yankees, going 7-0 with a 1.62 ERA.

"Trey served as a starter, reliever and closer," said Yankee head coach James Beavers. "He proved to be the most solid pitcher on our staff."
